President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will launch a National Engineers’ Award starting in 2026 to honor the pivotal role of engineers in shaping the nation’s development.

The announcement came as the Maldives marked its first-ever National Engineers’ Day on 30 August.

Addressing the inaugural event, President Muizzu extended warm greetings to engineers across all sectors and officially declared 30 August as “Maldives Engineers’ Day,” to be celebrated annually.

The date was chosen to commemorate the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge, the country’s largest infrastructure project, inaugurated seven years ago.

Reflecting on its transformative impact, President Muizzu highlighted how engineering excellence has enhanced connectivity, fueled economic growth, and improved the daily lives of Maldivians.

He also emphasized the role of engineers in achieving national goals, including the government’s vision to make the Maldives a developed nation by 2040, accelerating digitalization efforts, and advancing the shift toward renewable energy.

Looking ahead, President Muizzu affirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding education, research, and training opportunities in engineering while ensuring engineers receive due recognition through the upcoming National Engineers’ Award.

Concluding his address, the President praised the ingenuity of Maldivian ancestors and urged modern engineers to carry forward this legacy of innovation, ending with a prayer for a prosperous and progressive future for the Maldives.
