President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his heartfelt condolences following the passing of Mohamed Umar Manik, widely regarded as a pioneer of the Maldives’ tourism industry. Manik passed away in Singapore on Saturday at the age of 78, after receiving medical treatment there.

In a public statement, President Muizzu lauded Manik’s remarkable contributions to transforming the Maldives into a world-renowned tourist destination.

He described Manik’s legacy as one that shaped the nation’s tourism landscape for generations to come.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef also extended his condolences to Manik’s family, honoring his enduring impact on the nation’s economic development.

Affectionately known as M.U. Manik, he was part of the visionary group that launched the Maldives’ first resort, Kurumba Village, in 1972, a bold step taken despite a United Nations delegation’s assessment that the islands were unsuitable for tourism.

His vision laid the foundation for the iconic “one island, one resort” model that now defines Maldivian hospitality.

Under his leadership, Universal Enterprises expanded into one of the country’s leading resort operators, managing numerous luxury properties over the years.

Manik also chaired the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) for over three decades and served as chairman of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) until early 2024.

Additionally, he held positions on the boards of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and Island Aviation Services Limited, reflecting his deep involvement in national development.

Manik was a recipient of the prestigious Order of the Dignified Rule of Muleege Dynasty (N.M.S.A.), honoring his lifelong contributions.
