The Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions has opened a window for the public to submit opinions on the contentious Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, introduced by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru.

The Committee on Independent Institutions has set a deadline of September 6 at 11:59 p.m. for feedback.

According to a parliamentary statement, individuals and organizations wishing to share their views may do so via email to the committee or by delivering written submissions directly to Parliament.

The bill, which proposes merging the Maldives Media Council and the Broadcasting Commission into a powerful new regulatory body, was passed in an extraordinary sitting on Wednesday with 49 lawmakers voting in favor and 12 against, primarily backed by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

The vote took place amid ongoing protests by journalists, some of whom were briefly detained before being released.

Committee work on the bill is already underway, with the review expected to be completed by September 15.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has also met with journalists and representatives of the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) to hear their concerns.

Journalists said the President assured them he does not intend to control the media and would instruct Parliament to amend the bill.

However, MJA maintains the bill should be withdrawn entirely due to the number of revisions required.

The President has reportedly said he would consider the request and seek the Attorney General’s advice before taking further steps.
