Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed appointed Chief Justice of the Maldives

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially appointed Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice of the Maldives.

The appointment was made during a special ceremony held at the President’s Office on Tuesday morning, where the President personally handed over the letter of appointment.

Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed took his oath of office in accordance with Article 147 of the Maldivian Constitution.

The oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice  Uz Abdulla Hameed, after which the new Chief Justice signed the official declaration of office.

Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee brings with him a strong academic and professional background in both civil and Islamic law.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University (2000), a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Shariah Policy (2022), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from the Islamic University of Maldives (2024).

He is currently pursuing doctoral studies in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.

Before ascending to the highest judicial post in the country, Uz Abdul Ghanee served as the President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal.

His distinguished legal career includes tenures as Chief Judge of the High Court, a judge on the Supreme Court and Civil Court, and membership in the Judicial Service Commission.

He has also contributed extensively to legal education, having taught at the Islamic University of Maldives, Villa College, and Zikura College.
