Technical trials of passenger check-in and boarding systems have been successfully carried out in preparation for the opening of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).

These simulations were part of the mandatory Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, aimed at ensuring full functionality and coordination of systems before the terminal becomes operational.

The process involved departments from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) working in coordination with the national airline, Maldivian.

Trials covered a range of systems essential to passenger processing, including the departure control system, baggage reconciliation system, and the boarding process.

An additional trial assessed the efficiency of managing passenger queues at check-in counters.

The new terminal is expected to enhance passenger handling capacity and streamline airport operations through modern facilities and improved service flow.

A phased relocation of airline operations to the terminal will take place in line with the ORAT schedule.

The opening of the terminal is being planned in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence, making it a significant milestone for the country’s aviation infrastructure.
