Maldives to designate specific islands for halal tourism development

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a bold new initiative to develop halal tourism in the Maldives by designating several islands exclusively for this purpose.

The announcement was made through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

In his statement, President Dr. Muizzu revealed that the upcoming project will offer significant incentives to attract investors, with the aim of diversifying the country’s tourism portfolio.

He emphasized that the Maldives remains open to global investment and is ready to welcome partners from around the world.

Our tourism industry is one that is renowned across the world. We remain a model for sustainability, visitor experience and hospitality. Now, we aim to embark on being a leader and a benchmark in Halal Tourism.I am happy to announce that the government will be designating several islands exclusively for the development of halal tourism. This will be accompanied by major incentives for investors, helping to diversify and enhance our product offerings.

President Dr. Muizzu also noted that further details regarding the initiative will be disclosed by the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy in the coming week.

The initiative underscores the government's broader vision to expand the nation’s tourism industry by tapping into emerging markets and offering culturally inclusive travel experiences.
