Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has announced the government’s decision to make A-Level the official school-leaving qualification by the end of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s current administration.

The announcement was made during High Achiever's awards ceremony held tonight.

Dr. Shafeeu emphasized the administration’s commitment to broadening access to higher secondary education and highlighted the importance of increasing A-Level enrollment across the country.

There are still far too many students missing out on this opportunity, and we are determined to remove barriers that prevent them from continuing their studies. It would be a significant milestone for the Maldives' development if A-level becomes an integral part of school completion

Minister Shafeeu stated

The initiative to expand A-Level access began with a pilot program launched last year in 23 schools across the atolls, which resulted in a 38% increase in A-Level enrollment.

Building on that success, the program will be extended to schools in Malé for students who have completed their O-Level examinations this year, Minister announced.

Dr. Shafeeu also noted that the government has introduced alternative entry pathways for students who may not have met the traditional O-Level requirements.

Students who have passed even one or three O-Level subjects are now being given the opportunity to pursue A-Level studies, in a bid to make higher secondary education more inclusive.

He further shared that 106 more students qualified for university-level A-Level results last year compared to the previous year, reflecting progress in academic outcomes.

The ministry views the elevation of A-Level to the school leaving standard as a major milestone in the country’s education reform and a step forward in human capital development.
