First Lady establishes voluntary health organization inspired by Merck Foundation
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has announced the formation of a new voluntary organization aimed at enhancing healthcare services across the Maldives.
The initiative was revealed during her participation in the committee meeting of the 7th Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative (MFFLI) Summit.
According to the President’s Office, the First Lady was inspired to establish the organization after witnessing the significant impact of the Merck Foundation’s initiatives.
In her remarks, the First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to expanding access to affordable, high-quality healthcare in the Maldives.
She stressed the importance of sustaining long-term technical partnerships to further strengthen the national health sector.
She also underscored the urgent need to raise community awareness and improve services in critical areas such as cancer screening and mental health.
Furthermore, she advocated for greater support and recognition of women’s leadership within the healthcare sector.
Highlighting her ongoing collaboration with the Merck Foundation, the First Lady noted efforts to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding infertility, as well as to address broader health issues like diabetes, hypertension, and women's empowerment.
The Maldives has seen several former First Ladies engage in similar social initiatives.
Former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim, wife of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, founded the association "She," which remains active in social service.
Former First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, spouse of President Abdulla Yameen, established the Sadaqah Foundation, which operated during his administration but has since ceased activity.
