The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially welcomed former President Mohamed Nasheed and members of The Democrats following their decision to dissolve the party and rejoin the MDP.

An emergency informal session of the MDP National Assembly was held tonight, during which a resolution to accept Nasheed and the Democrats was unanimously approved by the members present.

In a statement issued afterward, the MDP said the party is open to anyone committed to meaningful national reform.

The statement emphasized that the return of Nasheed and his faction comes at a critical time when “the government's actions have derailed” and “the democracy achieved through years of struggle is now under threat.”

The party stated that MDP will continue its work with the newly joined President Nasheed and members with him.

Every member joining the MDP will not hesitate to advocate for the sake of the country the statement read.

The party also reaffirmed its commitment to holding the current administration accountable and to protecting constitutional rights.

The Democrats had earlier this week passed a resolution at their National Assembly to dissolve the party and rejoin the MDP.

The resolution was introduced by the party’s Women’s Branch leader Fathimath Hamdha, who stressed the need for a united opposition to contest upcoming elections and restore public trust in the political system.

The Democrats were originally formed in 2023 after Nasheed and his supporters broke away from the MDP due to internal rifts.
