MDP national assembly to convene tonight amid Democrats’ push to rejoin
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to convene its National Assembly tonight at 8:30 p.m., as momentum builds around efforts by The Democrats to rejoin the party.
The move follows a resolution passed by The Democrats’ National Assembly to dissolve the party and merge back into the MDP.
The Democrats, formed in 2023 after a split from the MDP led by former President Mohamed Nasheed, cited the need for a strong, unified opposition to ensure government accountability and effectively contest future elections, including the upcoming local council polls.
Although the decision to dissolve the Democrats has not yet been finalized, all members, including Nasheed, have agreed in principle to rejoin the MDP.
The development comes at a time when competition within the MDP for the 2028 presidential ticket is intensifying. Nasheed has reportedly reached out to senior MDP and Democrat leaders to gauge support for a potential candidacy, while other prominent figures such as party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid are also said to be eyeing the nomination.
Tonight’s MDP National Assembly session is expected to set the stage for the next chapter in the party’s internal dynamics and broader opposition politics.
