7% of Maldivians identified as living with disabilities
Approximately 7% of the Maldivian population is living with some form of disability, according to data released by the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
This was revealed in a statement published on the government’s official website
According to 2022 census, which recorded 24,401 individuals with disabilities out of a total population of 382,639. This equates to one in every 15 people in the Maldives.
While this is the case, UN Global Disability Fund’s report, notes that over 14,000 individuals are currently registered with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) as persons with disabilities.
Stressing the importance of inclusion, the Ministry of Social and Family Development called for the active involvement of persons with disabilities in decisions that impact their lives.
The ministry emphasized that their voices should be heard in shaping disability-related policies and initiatives.
It also encouraged greater consultation with families when determining the future needs of individuals with disabilities.
The statement further underscored the role of education and skill development in empowering persons with disabilities.
Equipping them with knowledge and vocational training is essential for building stronger families and supporting broader social and economic participation, the ministry said.
To foster greater understanding, the ministry continues to run awareness programs aimed at educating the public about disability, early detection, and the range of support services available.
These efforts are part of the government’s broader initiative to create an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can thrive.
