Towbarless vehicles set to enhance operations at Velana International Airport
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that preparations are nearing completion to introduce towbarless aircraft towing vehicles at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking a significant upgrade in airport ground-handling capabilities.
In a post shared on X, MACL stated,
We are in the final stages of preparation for the operation of industry-standard towbarless vehicles for aircraft towing at Velana International Airport. This equipment represents the gold standard in efficiency and safety for towing aircraft from the apron to the runway.

The company added that eight trained operators are ready, pending a final risk assessment by relevant stakeholders.
The new vehicles towbarless tractors (TBLTs), also known as towbarless towing vehicles (TLTVs) replace traditional towing systems by lifting the aircraft directly by its nose wheel. This method enhances efficiency, safety, and maneuverability during towing operations.
VIA will be using the TPX–200MTX model, a modern towbarless truck employed at leading international airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore.
The model is known for its high safety standards, clear driver visibility, and ability to service a wide range of aircraft from Code C to Code E.
It also offers lower maintenance and operating costs compared to traditional systems.
MACL says the introduction of the new trucks is expected to boost towing efficiency by 60%, significantly accelerating aircraft movement and reducing turnaround time.
Once fully operational, the existing towbar system at VIA will be phased out.
Ali Shareef, Head of the Ramp Services Department at MACL, highlighted the importance of adopting such advanced technology.
He stated that as Velana International Airport undergoes major upgrades, they are working to introduce state-of-the-art aircraft servicing vehicles to ensure faster, safer, and more secure operations.
He also emphasized that the new trucks will streamline aircraft loading processes and enhance overall ground-handling efficiency.
In line with broader efforts to improve airport services, MACL noted that the new international terminal’s construction is progressing rapidly, and preparations for its opening are in full swing.
