Maldives condemns Israeli strikes on Iran, calls for urgent de-escalation

The Maldives has issued a strong condemnation of the recent Israeli military strikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran, voicing deep concern over the growing instability in the region.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the attack as a blatant act of aggression and a severe violation of international law. 

Israel’s continued disregard for international norms significantly undermines regional security and poses a serious threat to peace and stability

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu echoed this stance in a separate statement on social media, expressing firm condemnation of Israel’s actions.

Such acts constitute a serious violation of international law and jeopardise regional peace and stability

the President said

calling for immediate and decisive measures to halt the escalation of tensions.

The Maldivian government also highlighted that the Israeli assault on Iran comes at a time when its attack on Gaza continue unabated, contributing further to the destabilisation of the Middle East.

It urged the international community to take coordinated action to de-escalate the situation and prevent further deterioration.

Israeli   airstrikes on June 13, 2025,struck deep into Iran, targeting top military and nuclear leadership, a move confirmed by Iranian state media.

According to reports on Iranian news channels, the strikes killed Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran's chief of staff, as well as Gholam Ali Rashid, commander of the Khatam al‑Anbia headquarters.

In addition, the deaths of prominent nuclear scientists Fereydoun Abbasi‑Davani and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, among others were also reported.

The assassination-style precision of the strikes, reportedly hitting homes and secure compounds marks a chilling escalation, decapitating Iran’s strategic command and nuclear expertise and prompting Tehran to vow a “harsh and decisive” response.  

The Maldives joins a growing number of countries calling for restraint and a return to diplomatic channels to resolve the ongoing conflict and prevent a broader regional crisis.
