Judges Abdulla Hameed and Mohamed Saleem have officially assumed their roles as Justices of the Supreme Court of the Maldives.

The oath of office was administered this afternoon by Justice Aisha Shujune Mohamed in a ceremony held at the President’s Office.

Following the oath-taking, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu presented the official letters of appointment to the newly appointed Justices.

Their nominations had been sent to Parliament last Monday, where both appointments received unanimous approval in today’s parliamentary vote.

Justice Saleem was endorsed by 61 MPs, while 60 MPs voted in favour of Justice Hameed.

No votes were cast against either nominee, with support also coming from opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had opened applications for the two Supreme Court vacancies from 17 May for a one-week period.

Out of twelve applicants, Judges Saleem and Hameed secured the highest scores during the JSC’s evaluation process.

Justice Mohamed Saleem, who ranked first in the JSC interviews, previously served as a legal officer at the High Court for 12 years before being appointed as a judge in 2022.

Justice Abdulla Hameed served on the High Court bench from 2007 to 2022 and was a member of the JSC during his judicial tenure.
