Maldives urges for immediate end to hostilities in Gaza, calls for Israel to be held accountable

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, denouncing the continued targeting of innocent civilians as the conflict grows increasingly dire.

In a statement shared via social media platform X, President Muizzu described the Israeli actions as a “genocidal assault” and called for urgent international intervention to halt the violence.

He appealed to the global community to take swift and decisive steps to bring about an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Strongly and unequivocally condemn the continued targeting of innocent civilians by Israel in Gaza, as the genocidal assault by Israel intensifies.The Maldives calls on the international community to take decisive and immediate action to halt the escalation of violence and the immediate cessation of hostilities. We reiterate our call to take effective measures for the protection of civilian lives in accordance with the international legal and moral obligations and ensure that Israel is held accountable for its actions.

President's remarks come amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Israel has on Sunday also targeted the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza using drones, marking another blow to the territory’s already devastated healthcare system.

The latest assault comes amid repeated strikes on medical facilities during Israel’s 19-month genocide in Gaza.

Human rights organizations and United Nations-backed experts have accused Israel of systematically dismantling Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. 

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, at least 53,010 Palestinians have been killed and 119,919 wounded.

Meanwhile, the Strip’s Government Media Office has updated the death toll to more than 61,700, noting that thousands remain missing under the rubble and are presumed dead.
