Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop an airport in R. Fainu.
The agreement was signed on Sunday at a ceremony attended by senior officials from both companies.
MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee signed the contract on behalf of the company, while MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef represented the state-owned airports operator.
The development of an airport in Fainu was among President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s key pledges, first announced during his presidential campaign in 2023.
During a visit to the island on January 23 this year, President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment, assuring residents that construction would begin this year under MTCC.
Currently, Raa Atoll has only one operational airport, located in R. Ifuru.
Additionally, work is ongoing to develop another airport in the northern part of the atoll, in R. Alifushi.
