Maldives and Pakistan discuss establishing direct flights

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed ongoing discussions on establishing direct flights between the Maldives and Pakistan, highlighting their potential to strengthen connectivity, bring people closer and open new opportunities for tourism.

Speaking at the exchange of 20 Memoranda of Understanding during his state visit to Pakistan, the President identified improved air connectivity as an important part of efforts to expand bilateral cooperation.

President Muizzu also highlighted opportunities to develop halal and Muslim-friendly tourism, drawing on the two countries’ shared values and experiences.

The President said his discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif included expanding trade, encouraging investment, deepening tourism cooperation and strengthening connectivity.

Describing the Maldives and Pakistan as “worlds of untapped potential for each other,” he endorsed a target to increase bilateral trade from USD 13 million to USD 200 million within two years.

He also highlighted the Maldives–Pakistan Business Forum, scheduled for the following day, as an opportunity for business leaders and investors to develop mutually beneficial partnerships.

The 20 MoUs exchanged during the visit cover sectors including tourism, health, education, fisheries, agriculture, information technology, policing and defence.

President Muizzu stressed that the agreements must translate into practical benefits for people in both countries.

President Muizzu is undertaking a state visit to Pakistan from 20 to 22 October at the invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Pakistan.
