Police and ACC hold discussions on HDC corruption probe
The Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have initiated investigations into allegations of irregularities in the allocation of land plots under the Binveriya housing scheme.
The two institutions held discussions earlier today, attended by Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, ACC President Adam Shamil, and members of the ACC.
The investigations were triggered after revelations surfaced about land plots being registered under individuals not listed as recipients in the Binveriya housing scheme.
Among those implicated is Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, brother of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.
Despite not being on the recipient list, Fazeel reportedly holds a land registry in his name.
Further scrutiny has revealed that similar registrations may have been issued to other individuals.
Documents circulating on social media, purportedly related to these transactions, have been deemed illegitimate.
The Housing Ministry has confirmed that Fazeel did not receive land through the Binveriya scheme and clarified that the land in question remains unallocated.
The matter has placed HDC under intense scrutiny, leading to the suspension of the entire board of directors, excluding the chairman, as well as three senior employees.
HDC’s auditors have ordered the corporation to halt all financial transactions temporarily.
In a press conference last night, HDC Managing Director Fazul Rasheed denied any illegal allocation of land by the corporation.
He stated that such allocations could only be carried out by the Housing Ministry.
Meanwhile, police are investigating charges of forgery against Fazeel.
