President Dr. Muizzu increases import duty on cigarettes and bidi to curb smoking

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced a decision on Tuesday to raise the import duty on cigarettes and bidi as part of a broader effort to reduce smoking in the Maldives.

The move is aimed at discouraging tobacco consumption and will be accompanied by a national anti-smoking campaign.

In a statement posted on 'X' this morning,  President said the specific and ad valorem rates of import duty on cigarettes and bidi will be increased starting November 1, 2024.

The specific rate of import duty will rise from MVR 3 to MVR 8, while the ad valorem rate will see a 50% increase.

These proposed changes will be forwarded to Parliament this week for approval.

The president emphasized the importance of the role of enforcement agencies in preventing smoking in public areas.

Additionally, he announced the launch of a large-scale, nationally recognized campaign to help smokers quit, stressing the need for collective action to create a tobacco-free society.

Moreover, yesterday president disclosed plans to ban the import of vaping products and their components from November 15, 2024.

Starting in December, the use, possession, manufacture, sale, advertising, and distribution of vaping devices will be prohibited throughout the Maldives as well.
