Maldives Port Limited (MPL) and Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) have formalized an agreement to offer waste management services for ships providing bunkering services in Ihavandhippolhu.

The agreement was signed at a special ceremony held at MPL's head office.

MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim represented MPL, while WAMCO Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel signed on behalf of WAMCO.

Speaking to reporters, Wajeeh explained that WAMCO will manage the collection and disposal of waste discharged by ships at the North Gateway.

Plans are in place to construct a dedicated facility on a separate island to handle this waste.

With the bunkering service starting in the north, ships will discharge waste to our northern gateway, where they will be handed over to WAMCO, which will go and dispose of them,

Wajeeh said

Wajeeh highlighted that this collaboration will boost revenue for both MPL and WAMCO.

Additionally, WAMCO will handle the management of used oil and waste collection from ships, which will be transported to the Regional Waste Management Center in Kunburudhoo.

Our plan is to put a special tank for used oil there and refine it and send it to the people who need it. We have international partners working with us already. So that's how we will establish this service,

Mujuthaba said

Initially, the service will be operated by employees stationed in Kulhudhuffushi, using the company’s landing craft to transport the waste.

As the service grows, WAMCO indicated that more job opportunities will be created to support the expanded operations.
