Investigation launched into death threats against President Dr. Muizzu
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has initiated an investigation into death threats directed at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan confirmed via a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that authorities are taking the threats seriously and have begun a thorough investigation.
The threats surfaced after a man on ‘X’ posted screenshots of a Facebook account ‘Ablor Myad Yosef’ who allegedly made comments threatening the president.
In the screenshot ‘Ablor Myad Yosef’ made a post challenging the police to arrest him following his threatening statement.
Shifan emphasized that the case is currently under investigation, though further details have not been disclosed.
This is not the first time a Maldivian president has faced threats or assassination attempts.
In 2008, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom narrowly escaped an attack at Hoarafushi, where a man attempted to stab him with a knife hidden in a Maldivian flag.
The attempt was thwarted by a 16-year-old boy scout, Mohamed Jaisham, who bravely intervened, blocking the knife with his hands.
Jaisham sustained injuries and required medical treatment for his wounds.
Another notable incident occurred in 2015, when an explosion on the Finifenmaa, the presidential speedboat, targeted President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
While President Yameen escaped unhurt, his spouse, First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, sustained serious injuries, and several others on board were wounded.
Despite the severity of these threats, Shifan assured the public that the police are actively investigating the latest case, though no additional information has been released at this time.
