President Dr. Muizzu seeks investment, digital cooperation in meeting with Singapore's Foreign Minister
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held a productive meeting on Wednesday with Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The discussions focused on advancing investment opportunities, enhancing digital infrastructure, and addressing pressing climate change issues.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu underscored the Maldives' need for technical expertise in public housing and shared his vision of transforming Ras Malé into a cutting-edge, eco-friendly digital city.
He also highlighted the importance of improving digital services, particularly for the country’s youth, who represent 50% of the population.
The President expressed the need for full access to international payment platforms, such as PayPal, which would allow young Maldivian entrepreneurs to access global markets and showcase their innovations.
In addition to economic cooperation, the two leaders explored shared international concerns, particularly through their roles in the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).
They discussed ways to strengthen collaboration on key issues such as climate resilience and sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their mutual commitment to enhancing diplomatic relations and expanding strategic cooperation on areas of common interest.
Maldives and Singapore first established diplomatic relations on 20 February 1975, and this meeting further solidified the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
