Satellite monitoring system for Maldivian waters coming soon: Ghassan

Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon announced that the Maldives is working on monitoring its maritime area using a satellite in space.

Speaking on PSM’s “Dhivehinge Adu Dhuniye ah,” Minister Ghassan highlighted that President Dr. Muizzu has prioritized safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.

Minister Ghassan pointed to the enhanced resources and personnel of the Air Corps of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the expanded use of drones for maritime surveillance as examples.

This year, we have inducted Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) into the service of the MNDF that are capable of surveillance and attack enemies in our territory from the air. We have now begun to monitor our territory very extensively

Minister Ghassan stated that the Ministry of Defense is collaborating with the young founders of the Maldives Space Research Organization, who are in contact with NASA, to implement the President’s policy of safeguarding the Maldives’ maritime area.

As part of this effort, we are looking at establishing a satellite surveillance system to monitor our maritime domain, in the near future. The President wants to fulfill Maldives’ international responsibility and ensure peaceful travel through our territory
