President Dr. Muizzu discusses Maldives’ fiscal challenges and reforms with UN Secretary-General

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday afternoon, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to playing a more active role within the UN system, particularly on key issues impacting Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

He shared insights into the fiscal challenges facing the country and discussed the government's ongoing efforts to implement fiscal reforms aimed at reducing debt and restoring fiscal sustainability.

The President emphasized the critical need for support from both bilateral and multilateral partners in these reform efforts.

United Nations Secretary-General Guterres praised the Maldives for its proactive stance on global challenges, particularly in addressing climate change adaptation.

He reiterated his full commitment to supporting the Maldives in its adaptation efforts, as well as in tackling other pressing challenges facing the nation.

President Dr Muizzu concluded the meeting by expressing his gratitude to the Secretary-General, acknowledging the UN’s role in providing a platform for member states to address global concerns under Guterres' leadership.

He extended his appreciation for the ongoing support and opportunities extended to the Maldives within the UN system.
