Democratic governance should be based on Islam and local customs: President Dr. Muizzu

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that the Maldives' democratic governance should be firmly rooted in Islamic principles.

In a message shared on the occasion of International Democracy Day, the President highlighted the importance of ensuring that the democratic system aligns with the beliefs and customs of the Maldivian people, who are predominantly Muslim.

In a messege he shared on social media platform X,

The country’s democratic system of governance should be founded on Islam, the principles embraced by the people, and their customs

He wrote

Democracy has been part of the Maldivian political system for the past 16 years, during which significant reforms have been implemented, including the separation of powers between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
