Over 11 kg of drugs confiscated at Velana International Airport

Maldives Customs has successfully intercepted a significant drug smuggling attempt, seizing a total of 11.62 kilograms of various narcotics at Velana International Airport.

The haul, which included cathinone, cannabis, and heroin, was confiscated as the smugglers attempted to bring the drugs into the Maldives by air on August 14, 2024.

In a post on X, Maldives Customs revealed that the seized narcotics consisted of 0.680 kg of cathinone, 10.20 kg of cannabis, and 0.740 kg of heroin.

The total street value of the confiscated drugs is estimated at MVR 9.86 million.

While synthetic Cathinone was seized on 14th of this month, Cannabis and heroin was seized on 19th. 

The discovery follows another significant bust earlier in the month.

On August 11, Customs officials seized 6.070 kg of drugs from a national from a Dutch national.

The estimated value of the drugs confiscated in that operation is MVR 9.1 million.
