The Aviation Security Command successfully intercepted an attempted smuggling operation at Velana International Airport (VIA) today, seizing over USD 81,000 from a foreign traveler.

According to a statement posted on the authority's X account, the confiscated sum was found concealed in the luggage of a Bangladeshi citizen, who was en route to Dhaka on a US-Bangla Airlines flight.

The cash, totaling USD 81,030 (equivalent to MVR 1.2 million), was cleverly hidden inside a cornflakes box.

The dollars were sealed in a foil packet within the cereal packaging.

In a video released by the Aviation Security Command, the traveler can be heard claiming that he had received the money from an individual at the Champa guest house.

Authorities have also shared video footage and photographs of the seizure as part of their ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities at the airport.

The investigation continues as officials seek to uncover more details behind the smuggling attempt.
