Prominent businessman Mohamed 'OK' Zahir passes away at age 76
Veteran businessman and prominent politician Mohamed 'OK' Zahir has passed away at the age of 76.
Zahir, who was undergoing treatment at Asiri Hospital in Sri Lanka following a prolonged illness, was a well-respected figure in both the business and political arenas of the Maldives.
Zahir served as the Chief Executive Officer of Thilafushi Corporation Limited (TCL) during former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration and played a key role in the formation of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the largest political party in the Maldives.
He was an active participant in the Minivan Bahus (Independent Debate) from 2004 and held the position of MDP’s president for the Laamu Atoll Fonadhoo constituency.
In recognition of his significant contributions to the nation’s economic development, Zahir was awarded the National Award for Public Service in 1993.
He was known for his entrepreneurial ventures, including the manufacture of washing powder and air fresheners, as well as the export of fish and fish products.
In a post on X, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu paid tribute to Zahir's efforts to establish factories in the Maldives and introduce locally-produced goods to the market.
Additionally, Vice President Hussain Mohammed Lateef also extended their heartfelt condolences to Zahir's family, acknowledging his lasting impact on the nation.
