MTCC awarded MVR 29.85 million contract to expand Maafaru Airport
Maldivian Airlines has awarded the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) with the task of expanding the aircraft parking area at Maafaru International Airport, located in Noonu Atoll.
The agreement was signed today by Abdulla Ziyad, the CEO of MTCC, and Ibrahim Ilyas, the Managing Director of Island Aviation Services Limited, during a handover ceremony.
Maafaru, home to a population of 1,250, primarily relies on fishing and construction, with many residents employed at the Maafaru International Airport.
This project aims to further modernize the airport's services by expanding the apron area, which will, in turn, enhance the facility's operations and create additional job opportunities for the local community and the broader Noonu Atoll region.
The expansion will also increase the parking capacity for private jets, leading to a rise in the number of private jets landing at Maafaru International Airport.
Consequently, the area is expected to see a boost in tourist arrivals and increased revenue from jet parking fees, according to MTCC.
The project will involve the demolition of 453 square meters of an existing fire road, removal of 18,660 square meters of sand, preparation of a subbase, construction of a wearing course, and grade compaction over 4,047 square meters. Additionally, a new airfield lighting system will be installed.
MTCC said the project has been awarded to the company for MVR 29.85 million and will be completed within 180 days.
