In an interview with Indian news channel The Print on Friday, Fayyaz Ismail, Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Minister of Economic Development, expressed cautious optimism regarding Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's ongoing visit to the Maldives.

This visit marks the first official engagement since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office.

We hope Jaishankar's visit to Maldives will continue the warming of ties between our countries that we saw recently. But Muizzu government has flip-flopped many times and is unpredictable. We are keeping our fingers crossed

Fayyaz Ismail remarked

He elaborated on the challenges posed by the current administration, stating,

Unfortunately, we don't have a clear understanding of how Dr. Muizzu's government operates or what their long-term strategies might be. What we do know is definitely Dr. Muizzu’s government and its many other manifestations in the form of previous parties like PPM, PNC, DRP etc. they have a specific tilting towards China

Fayyaz further stated

Fayyaz contrasted the current government’s stance with that of the previous administration, highlighting that under the MDP-led government,

But in our government, our highest priority was the security of Maldives, and that entailed the security of the Indian Ocean region, the stability of the Indian Ocean region. So that was our main foreign policy

Fayyaz remarked

Jaishankar’s three-day visit is seen as a significant diplomatic effort to maintain and potentially enhance the relationship between India and the Maldives, despite the uncertainties surrounding the new government’s foreign policy orientation.
