MDP calls on government to apologize for "India Out" campaign
In a significant diplomatic moment, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subramaniam Jaishankar met with Abdullah Shahid, President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), during his official visit to the Maldives.
This marks the first time an Indian government official has met with a Maldives opposition leader on such an official occasion.
The MDP issued a statement following the meeting, highlighting its stance on India-Maldives relations.
During the discussions, Shahid expressed his gratitude to India for its unwavering assistance to the Maldives, particularly noting the recent agreements signed between the two nations in various fields of development.
The MDP also acknowledged India as the Maldives' most reliable partner, consistently providing rapid international assistance whenever needed.
However, the MDP expressed regret over the previous government's attempts to foster anti-India sentiment through the "India Out" campaign.
The party criticized the portrayal of India—a long-standing friend and development partner—as a bully, which it argued had negative repercussions on the Maldives' economy and international standing.
With the recent shift in policy under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu—from “India Out” to “Welcome India”—the MDP welcomed the change but emphasized the need for it to be more than just a temporary adjustment.
We hope that this change will not be a temporary or showy change, but a sustainable and meaningful change for the benefit of the people
Shahid stated
The opposition party also called on the government to apologize for the harm caused by the “India Out” campaign.
The MDP calls on the government of President Dr Muizzu to apologize to the people for the lies made by the India Out campaign and the damage caused by it
the statement read.
Shahid was accompanied by senior MDP figures, including Parliamentary Group Leader Mohammad Nazil and Vice President Hisan Hussain, who joined him in reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties with India.
The meeting underscored the MDP’s belief in the importance of a sustained and positive relationship with India, which they view as essential for the future prosperity and stability of the Maldives.
