The Human Rights and Gender Committee of the People’s Majlis has unanimously approved the appointment of Ismail Habeeb to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).

The decision was made during a committee meeting held on Tuesday.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu nominated Habeeb for the HRCM in mid-July and forwarded the nomination for parliamentary review on July 15.

The president’s request for parliamentary approval was read out during a parliamentary sitting and referred to the Human Rights and Gender Committee on the same day.

An application window for the vacancy at HRCM was opened in June 2024, following the resignation of the commission’s Vice President, Dr. Ahmed Adhuham Abdulla, who stepped down in October 2023.

Ismail Habeeb, who previously served as Vice President of the Elections Commission (EC), resigned from his position in March after completing two terms.

According to the commission's regulations, a member can serve a maximum of two five-year terms.

The committee members present at the meeting unanimously voted in favor of Habeeb’s appointment, signaling a strong endorsement for his role at the HRCM.
