Maldives and China strengthen bilateral relations in high-level talks

The Maldives and China have further strengthened their bilateral relationship through a high-level meeting on Monday between Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

The talks underscored both nations’ commitment to enhancing their long-standing partnership.

Minister Wang Yi welcomed Minister Zameer and reiterated China’s commitment to advancing cooperation with the Maldives.

During the meeting, Minister Zameer delivered President Dr.  Muizzu’s warm regards and presented two letters addressed to President Xi Jinping, reinforcing diplomatic ties.

The discussions highlighted the Maldives’ adherence to the One-China Principle and reaffirmed the strategic cooperative partnership established during President Muizzu’s recent state visit to China.

The talks covered a wide range of topics critical to the advancement of Maldives-China relations.

Minister Zameer praised over 50 years of robust cooperation between the Maldives and China, emphasizing the desire to further enhance the relationship.

He expressed gratitude for China’s support through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), citing key projects such as the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the expansion of Velana International Airport, and social housing developments.

Addressing the Maldives’ economic and fiscal challenges, Minister Zameer highlighted the need for continued support from China in implementing the fiscal reforms announced by President Dr Muizzu.

He emphasized that these reforms are crucial for bolstering investor confidence and strengthening the Maldivian economy.

Both ministers reaffirmed their dedication to exploring new avenues for collaboration. Minister Zameer expressed sincere appreciation for China’s ongoing support and looked forward to deepening their political and economic partnership.

Accompanying Minister Zameer were key officials, including Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq, Minister of Finance, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, and Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Ambassador-Designate, along with senior officials from the Maldivian government and embassy in China.

The meeting concluded with a reception hosted by Minister Wang Yi, celebrating the growing and enduring relationship between the Maldives and China.
