In a social media message marking World Mental Health Day, President Dr. Muizzu said efforts to improve mental health services would take into account the experiences and concerns of service users and address the needs of the Maldivian population.
He said the Government was pursuing these goals through the Mental Health Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, alongside policy and legal reforms that include developing a National Mental Health Policy and a comprehensive Mental Health Act.
The President also outlined plans to expand access to care by incorporating mental health services into primary health care, strengthening regional and specialist services, and improving tele-mental health support and crisis response systems.
President Dr. Muizzu emphasized the importance of preventing mental health conditions and identifying concerns early, while ensuring that people can access appropriate treatment and support.
He also highlighted the need to create a more supportive society where communities look out for one another and people feel comfortable discussing mental health concerns without fear of judgment.
The Government’s stated objective is to build a health care system that responds to the needs of people experiencing mental health difficulties while promoting greater awareness, understanding and community support across the Maldives.
