Three police officers have been awarded Gold Medals for bravery after rescuing eight people when the Hawks Voyage landing craft capsized near Gaafaru in Kaafu Atoll on July 31.

Senior Sergeant Ahmed Amir, Constable Mohamed Lahfan and Constable Ali Zidhan received the medals from Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed during a special ceremony at the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, the police headquarters.

According to police, 10 people were thrown into the sea when the vessel capsized.

The three officers battled rough seas and adverse weather to bring eight of them to safety.

Two people remained missing following the incident.

Despite an extensive search by the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard, neither was found.

Police said the medals recognised the officers’ courage and their efforts to save lives despite the risks to their own safety.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed praised the officers for their exemplary conduct and bravery in the face of danger, describing these as qualities that all police officers should uphold.
