The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed sadness and concern over the closure of the German Honorary Consulate in Malé, calling for consular services to be restored in the capital at the earliest opportunity.
In a press release, the opposition party described Germany as a longstanding development partner and said the consulate had served as an important link between the two countries.
The MDP said Germany’s partnership with the Maldives, both bilaterally and through its role within the European Union, had supported development in several areas, including climate change adaptation and the transition to renewable energy.
The party also highlighted Germany’s support during the Maldives’ democratic transition and subsequent efforts to strengthen democracy.
It said Germany had remained a consistent supporter of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as a friend of the MDP.
Raising concerns about the potential implications for tourism, the party described Germany as one of the Maldives’ most important visitor markets.
It argued that access to nearby consular assistance provided reassurance to German tourists and that the closure removed that reassurance in a market where visitor confidence was important.
The MDP criticised the government for not doing more to prevent the closure, describing it as a reflection of broader neglect of the Maldives’ relationships with longstanding international partners.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close ties with Germany and expressed hope that consular services would soon be restored in Malé.
The German Embassy in Colombo published a notice dated 2 October 2026 confirming that the Office of the Honorary Consul in the Maldives had closed until further notice.
The announcement did not disclose the reason for the closure, when the decision was made or a reopening date.
It advised German nationals requiring emergency assistance to contact the embassy in Colombo, while warning that assistance would be limited to advice because Germany currently has no representative in the Maldives.
