One arrested in Hulhumalé three-rider motorcycle crash; Suspect has extensive prior criminal record

A man riding on a motorcycle carrying three people that was involved in a crash in Hulhumalé Phase 2 has been arrested under a court order and remanded in custody.

Regarding the case, police stated that the individual arrested is Mohamed Saif (27), from Irumathige, L. Maamendhoo.

The incident occurred late at night on October 7, 2026, at around 02:55 AM on Nirolhu Magu in Hulhumalé Phase 2.

A total of five people were injured in the dangerous collision between two motorcycles, four of whom received medical treatment for serious injuries. After initial treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital, the injured were transferred to IGMH for further care.

According to police investigations, one of the motorcycles involved in the accident was carrying three people and driving against a one-way street.

Furthermore, the motorcycle is believed to have been stolen, and the person operating it did not possess a valid driving license for that category of land vehicle.

Mohamed Saif, who was among those injured in the crash, was arrested under a court order on October 12, 2026, after being discharged from the hospital.

Upon being presented before the court for a remand hearing, the court ordered him to be remanded in custody for 7 days.

Police revealed that Saif has an extensive record of traffic violations. Specifically, he has 13 prior records for driving without a license, as well as previous offenses recorded against him for driving without paying the annual fee, without a valid roadworthiness certificate or insurance, and driving while using a telecommunication device.

The Maldives Police Service is continuing to investigate the matter.
