The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media that appears to show a same-sex marriage ceremony being held at a resort in the Maldives.
In a statement, police said they are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the video and have been investigating the matter since it first came to their attention.
The police noted that same-sex marriage is not legally recognised in the Maldives, adding that such acts are contrary to the country's laws and established social and ethical standards.
The statement also highlighted that Islam is the state religion of the Maldives, describing the acts depicted in the video as being in violation of Islamic and Shariah principles.
Police have urged all parties to refrain from engaging in activities that violate Maldivian laws.
They also called on stakeholders to ensure that foreign employees working at resorts, guesthouses and other workplaces do not conduct or facilitate such activities.
The police further stated that appropriate legal action would be taken against those found to have engaged in acts that violate the country's laws and Islamic principles.
