Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has appealed to the High Court against the court order authorising his arrest over allegations of sexually abusing a minor.
The appeal was filed yesterday, although the High Court has yet to decide whether to accept the case for consideration.
Shahid was arrested last Monday night under a court warrant on suspicion of sexually abusing a person under the age of 18, police confirmed in a statement.
He was subsequently presented before the court for a remand hearing on Tuesday, where an order was issued to detain him for 30 days as investigations continue.
Shahid, 64, denied the allegations in a post on X shortly before his arrest, describing the claims as fabricated and politically motivated.
The rumours being circulated for the purpose of political character assassination are baseless lies. I urge everyone to refrain from spreading such unsubstantiated information
Shahid previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
He also served as President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, becoming the first Maldivian to hold the position.
