In the current ongoing 19th parliament session, Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem are set to face a no-confidence vote as a notice has been officially sent by the parliament today.

The no-confidence issue was initiated by the PPM/PNC coalition group last month on the 28th.

The coalition alleges that Speaker Aslam has displayed favoritism towards a specific party, acting against constitutional responsibilities.

This claim is supported by 23 members of the coalition, including members from PPM, PNC, MDA, MNP, and independent member Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla.

The catalyst for the no-confidence motion arose when the opposition rejected the approval of some members appointed by President Muizzu to the cabinet.

In response, the PPM/PNC coalition parliamentary group issued a statement asserting that while all members agreed and reported on the matter, Speaker Aslam did not allow discussion and promptly sent the report back to the committee.

As the no-confidence notice is submitted for both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the final meeting of the 19th parliament is scheduled for tomorrow.

During this session, President Dr. Muizzu's first official statement will me given.

It's noteworthy that Aslam assumed the position of Speaker following the resignation of the previous Speaker of the 19th parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.

Alongside him, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla also resigned, prompted after a vote of no confidence from the MDP and a Supreme Court ruling declaring the parliament's suspension unlawful.
