Civil service employees play a key role in preventing corruption and improving public service delivery, according to Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu.

Speaking at the opening of the Civil Service Conference, the Minister said civil servants are directly responsible for delivering government services to the public and therefore hold an important responsibility in ensuring transparency and accountability.

He noted that the civil service consists of around 35,000 employees, which is roughly one civil servant for every 15 citizens.

He also pointed out that the sector accounts for a significant portion of government spending, making efficient administration essential for public trust.

The Minister said delays in administrative work can weaken confidence in public institutions.

He stressed that eliminating corruption would help ensure that government offices operate more effectively and use public funds responsibly to deliver better services.

He added that reducing corruption is a key part of building a citizen-focused system under the Maldives 2.0 vision introduced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Civil servants were urged to prioritise the needs of citizens in all aspects of their work.

The President of the Civil Service Commission also addressed the conference, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve the public service system.

He noted recent salary adjustments for government employees and said broader reforms under Maldives 2.0 are expected to further improve working conditions and service delivery.

The conference brought together around 300 representatives from councils, schools, and hospitals.

Participants reviewed research papers across several administrative and service-related areas as part of discussions on improving the efficiency of the civil service system.
