Nasheed wins MDP Chairperson election by landslide
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has won the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election by a wide margin, securing nearly 69 percent of the vote in a contest that drew more than 30,000 party members to the polls.
Provisional results show that 30,626 members cast ballots in the nationwide election, with 30,363 votes deemed valid.
Nasheed received 20,943 votes, comfortably defeating his main challenger, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, who secured 9,251 votes.
The third candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed, received 169 votes.
Nasheed's victory was reflected across much of the country, as he secured majorities in nearly every atoll and all major cities.
His strongest performances came in key population centres, including Malé, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Thinadhoo City, and Kulhudhuffushi City.
In Malé, Nasheed received 3,601 votes compared to Meekail's 1,502.
He also maintained sizeable leads in Addu City, Fuvahmulah, Thinadhoo, and Kulhudhuffushi, demonstrating broad support among party members nationwide.
Meekail's only atoll-level victory came in Lhaviyani Atoll, largely due to strong support in Hinnavaru.
There, he secured 547 votes against Nasheed's 423.
The election attracted more than 30,000 voters from an eligible membership exceeding 50,000, making it one of the party's largest internal votes in recent years.
Following the release of early results, Nasheed's supporters gathered at Artificial Beach in Malé to celebrate the outcome.
The former president later joined supporters and greeted party members as celebrations continued.
The result marks a significant political victory for Nasheed, who had expressed confidence throughout the campaign that he would secure a decisive win.
