85 residents from 18 apartments displaced after Hiyaa Tower fire: NDMA
A fire that broke out at Hiyaa Tower 5 yesterday evening has displaced residents from 18 apartments, with damage proving more extensive than initially assessed, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In an initial update shared on social media earlier today, the NDMA said temporary shelter had been provided to 37 individuals from seven apartments affected by the fire.
However, in a subsequent update, the authority confirmed that assistance has now been extended to 85 individuals from 18 apartments who sought support following the incident.
The NDMA stated that essential assistance, including food and beverages, has been provided to those displaced, while temporary accommodation arrangements remain in place.
According to the authority, the fire caused significant damage to the plumbing and sewerage systems of 38 apartments within the residential tower.
In response, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun assessing the extent of the damage and carrying out necessary repair work to the affected infrastructure.
The NDMA said it is continuing to work closely with the HDC to monitor the situation and conduct further assessments as recovery efforts continue.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire originated from waste materials accumulated in the building’s ventilation shaft, though the exact cause of ignition has yet to be determined.
