Four new airports to be opened next year

MTCC CEO Adam Azim has stated four new airports are likely to be completed by next year. 

Speaking to the media, Azim stated that the company is currently working on developing a total of five airports. This includes the construction of Raa Atoll Alifushi, Meemu Muli, Faafu Magoodhoo and Gaafu Dhaalhu Faresmaathoda Airport. The company is also working on the expansion of Noonu Maafaru Airport.

According to Azim, construction on the Maafaaru airport expansion project will start in January of next year, and efforts are being made to finish the job within a year as per the agreement.

He stated that MTCC is doing at the best possible level and he is confident that the quality of the airport built by the company will also improve. 

Planning Ministry handed over the design and completion of Muli Airport to MTCC within a year on 28 February. The cost of the project is MVR 221 Million. 

The company was awarded the contract to build the Magodhoo airport for MVR 231 million on October 19. The company awarded MVR 451 million to develop an airport on the island by acquiring land from Aloofushi Lagoon. The project was to be completed within two years. 

He also said that Faresmathoda Airport was the first airport where land reclamation was initiated during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's tenure. The land acquisition for the airport was initially awarded to Gulf Kobla company for $2.5 million. However, the work was taken over from Gulf Kobla company and handed over to MTCC in 2019.
