Chinese envoy highlights global south's rise, urges unity against economic pressures
Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, has voiced strong criticism against what he described as neo-colonial economic strategies employed by certain global powers, asserting that the Global South is experiencing a powerful resurgence with China playing a leading role.
In a recent statement, Ambassador Kong called out the United States for weaponizing tariff wars to maintain global economic dominance.
He argued that such actions seek to confine developing nations to the lower rungs of the international industrial chain, infringing upon their right to develop.
The U.S. attempt to suppress the growth of other nations in order to maintain its dominance in the global economy is ultimately doomed to fail
Ambassador Kong stated
Citing data from the past two decades, he noted that emerging markets and developing economies have maintained an average annual growth of 5.2%, contributing over 80% to global economic growth.
These nations now account for 40% of the world economy, a testament to their growing influence in shaping the global economic order.
Ambassador Kong emphasized the need for the Global South to deepen cooperation, enhance regional integration, and diversify partnerships to avoid overdependence on any single power.
He highlighted China’s own economic resilience, achieving 5% growth in 2024 and accelerating to 5.4% in early 2025 as a source of confidence and support for fellow developing nations.
China, he added, is committed to expanding market access, supporting infrastructure development, and improving connectivity for countries in the Global South.
As long as the countries of the Global South stand united and work together, we will inject powerful momentum into global peace and shared prosperity, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
