Opposition leader and Former President Abdulla Yameen will appeal his jail sentence as soon as possible over the bribe and money laundering charges convicted against him. 

Former President Yameen is the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate for the upcoming 2023 presidential election. His sentence came on Sunday after the criminal court found him guilty. 

Former President Yameen denied any claims. President Yameen is set to serve his sentence in a specially selected prison that had previously housed several politicians. 

The legal team of the Former President Yameen has stated that they will immediately file an appeal against the criminal court ruling. The legal team head Former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed stated that they are working to appeal as quickly as possible. 

The Criminal Court released the trial and case report to Yameen's legal team after a day of trial. 

The opposition leadership team has now protested over the verdict and claimed the ruling was unlawful.
