The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), in collaboration with the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) of the Maldives, on Monday launched a five-day training program in Malé titled “Building the Capacity of Imams and Preachers.”

The initiative, conducted under IMCTC’s “Wasata” strategy, aims to equip Maldivian imams and preachers with the knowledge and tools to effectively counter extremist ideologies.

The program was inaugurated in the presence of the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed; Minister of Sports, Abdulla Rafiu; and IMCTC Secretary-General, Maj. Gen. Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Shaheem emphasized the program’s significance, stating, that Terrorism is an ideological disease with no religion, and the cure lies in offering correct knowledge and information based on the principles of Islam.

He highlighted the importance of addressing extremism through accurate and credible knowledge.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its leadership in global counterterrorism efforts,

Thanks to the measures taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in countering terrorism and extremism, it has become a model for other nations to follow. The Republic of Maldives also continues its efforts to counter terrorism and extremism under the leadership of H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. I strongly believe that Saudi Arabia and the Maldives, working together, are well positioned to achieve significant accomplishments in this field

He stated

IMCTC Secretary-General Maj. Gen. Al-Moghedi affirmed the Coalition’s commitment to strengthening intellectual, media, financial, and military efforts in counterterrorism.

He noted that the program is part of IMCTC’s broader vision to enhance preparedness through professional training and capacity building.

This training program reflects the understanding among planners that countering terrorism is not limited to military means alone. It encompasses various dimensions, including countering extremist ideologies with sound thought and compelling argument—especially since distorted and misleading ideas often pave the way toward radicalization and violent behavior,

He added

He further added that IMCTC’s strategy includes 15 key initiatives across four domains, ideological, media, counter terrorist financing, and military with plans to implement 90 training programs and 20 awareness campaigns across member states.

The five-day training includes lectures and workshops on extremist propaganda techniques, effective public speaking, communication skills, and the principles of moderation and balance in preaching.

Participants will also share their experiences and best practices in promoting religious awareness and social stability.

This initiative is part of IMCTC’s ongoing commitment to support member states in tackling terrorism through comprehensive, multidimensional strategies that combine security measures with intellectual and ideological engagement.
