77,000 foreigners’ biometric data collected so far: Minister Ihusaan
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced that biometric data of 77,000 foreigners living in the Maldives has been collected so far.
Speaking in Parliament today, Minister Ihusaan revealed that since November 17, the government has regularized 40,000 foreigners.
Of the illegal immigrants, 2,021 were deported in 2023 and 5,613 by 2024. The last government regularized only 21,000 foreigners during the entire term
He further noted
The minister emphasized the government's commitment to resolving the issue of undocumented foreign workers in the Maldives.
Efforts have been strengthened through collaboration between enforcement agencies, which began last year.
In addition to deporting illegal immigrants, the government is providing opportunities for undocumented workers to enter the legal system.
It is also working to streamline the collection of biometric data and address related challenges systematically.
As part of these efforts, Operation Karangi was launched on May 2 last year to establish a long-term solution to the issue of undocumented foreigners in the Maldives.
Addressing a no-confidence motion against him, Minister Ihusaan highlighted recent achievements of various institutions under his ministry.
He noted that at the beginning of the current term, police services had not been established on 70 residential islands, but this number has since been reduced to 39.
The minister assured that police services will be available across all residential islands in the Maldives by the end of this year.
