The Ministry of Environment and Energy has announced significant progress in the President’s Five Million Tree Planting Program, with 450,936 trees planted so far this year.

Speaking to state media PSM on Sunday, the ministry highlighted that pledges have been made from 70 locations to plant an additional 4,219,456 trees under the initiative.

The program, which launched on June 5, 2024, is a presidential promise aimed at environmental restoration and combating the effects of climate change.

State-owned enterprises have played an active role in the initiative, with Stelco planting over 50,000 trees so far.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has also contributed by launching its own ambitious one-million-tree planting campaign.

The program focuses on reviving endangered tree species in the Maldives, with plans to plant 90 different types of trees.

It is considered a vital step in preserving the country’s natural environment and addressing the adverse impacts of climate change.
