MDP accuses ruling PNC of membership fraud
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) of using forged signatures to artificially inflate its membership numbers.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the MDP claimed it has received numerous complaints from its members, who allege they were removed from the MDP’s membership registry and added to the PNC without their knowledge or consent.
The MDP stated that this includes several members of its national council.
The opposition party condemned the alleged actions, asserting that they reflect a deliberate attempt by the PNC to meet the membership target of 100,000 set by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The MDP also announced plans to lodge a formal complaint with the Elections Commission (EC).
Additionally, the MDP accused the PNC administration of exploiting state institutions to facilitate and conceal the alleged malpractice.
The party called on the EC to strengthen regulations governing political party membership processes and to take legal action against the misuse of state resources and privileged citizen data.
